For our August Artist Commune, Urban Arts Space will host a free tote bag decorating and screen-printing workshop alongside the exhibiting artists of Women’s Work, Alex McClay and Stephanie Berrie.
The gallery will have multiple stations for participants to add embroidery, beads, and other elements to their bags and a station for painting them. Additionally, there will be a station where individuals can add a screen-printed design! Participants will be able to take their bag home with them at the end of the workshop. No previous printmaking experience necessary; this workshop is open to all experience levels.
**This event will be capped at 75 participants, so register early!
Women’s Work, on view at Urban Arts Space from August 20–September 21, exhibits Alex McClay’s weavings and beaded work in conjunction to Stephanie Berrie’s sewing and sculptural printmaking work, reclaiming the derogatory term “women’s work” in relation to the visual arts. Both McClay and Berrie explore themes of womanhood, feminism, and reclaiming power in vulnerability; McClay uses text as a powerful tool of protest in her weavings and beaded tapestries, expressing her strength as a survivor, while Berrie uses printmaking and sewing to recreate plants, animals, and bodies to explore her relationship as a human with her surrounding world. These works together will call the viewer to rethink what “women’s work” could be and to show the power, strength, detail, and time that is put into these artforms that are traditionally categorized as “craft.”
Artist Commune is a recurring event hosted by Urban Arts Space that allows artists and the community to come together to create art, discuss art, and network.
