Honoring Csuri's Legacy: Three Events Push Boundaries of Digital Art
Urban Arts Space (UAS) is excited to announce three upcoming events in the next month:
- On-Campus Visit with Artist Tega Brain — October 17, 2023, 5:30-7:00 PM
- Artist Commune: AI Art Workshop — October 27, 2023, 6:30-8:30 PM
- Virtual Talk with James Bridle, Author of Ways of Being — November 7, 2023, 12:30-1:45 PM
The three events are in conjunction with the now open exhibition at Hopkins Hall Gallery, Charles Csuri: Art and Research, Memorial Exhibition in Three Acts. Charles Csuri was a Fine Arts Professor at The Ohio State University who became a pioneer in computer art and animation in the twentieth century. Csuri founded the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) at Ohio State and co-founded Cranston/Csuri Productions (CCP), giving rise to groundbreaking innovations in animation.
Can a machine learn the environment? Artist Tega Brain will visit campus to address this question as well as discuss her life and work in digital art. Tega Brain is an Australian-born artist and environmental engineer who explores issues of ecology, data, automation, and infrastructure in her works. She is an Industry Associate Professor of Integrated Design and Media at New York University. The event will take place in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater and is free and open to the public.
On October 27, the Artist Commune: AI Art Workshop will be free for anyone to attend. The workshop will give participants a hands-on learning experience with AI artist tools. Experts will be in attendance to guide participants in experimenting with the tools.
A virtual talk with author James Bridle will be held on November 7 to discuss their book Ways of Being. The book explores the different kinds of intelligence—plant, animal, human, artificial—found in the world. In the book, Bridle draws on biology, computation, literature, art, and philosophy to discuss the various forms of intelligence in our world and how we can learn from them to live better and more equitably with one another. James Bridle is a writer, artist, and technologist whose artwork has been featured in galleries worldwide along with writing published in Wired, The Atlantic, and The Guardian.
UAS looks forward to hosting these three events to recognize the legacy of Charles Csuri and his revolutionary research and work in computer art and animation.
